Following Jesus Isn't About Fixing Yourself First

The curiosity of one of her closest friends led Ryan to share with her how God had changed her life. As Ryan prepared to head to San Diego for a summer mission trip, her friend Holly asked her a powerful question. The two used to party together, and Holly wanted to know why was Ryan so peaceful now and where had she found the courage to leave the group they previously partied with.

Ryan told Holly that God helped her get out. Holly shared that she wanted to do the same. Holly had just gotten a Bible, so Ryan encouraged her to read the Book of John over the summer.

During those summer months, God placed Holly on Ryan’s heart often. When Ryan returned from her San Diego trip, she told Holly that she wanted to take her to lunch for her birthday. They met up on a Saturday. It was timely because Holly had just come from an impactful conversation with a close friend where she and her friend decided it was best if they stopped talking.

Ryan and Holly met for lunch, and Holly had questions about Ryan’s summer mission and how it went. The two young women continued to connect, and Ryan asked questions about Holly’s personal story. Holly shared that she attended church but never liked it. Ryan asked Holly if she knew what the gospel was, and Holly replied she wasn’t sure.

Before they met, Ryan had a feeling she would share the gospel with Holly. So, she downloaded the GodTools© app in advance. Holly’s attention was locked in on Ryan as Ryan walked Holly through the four points of the gospel using the app. Ryan then asked Holly if there was anything stopping her from following Jesus and starting a relationship with him.

Holly shared that she had to work on her anxiety and distractions first. Ryan responded, “Making the decision of following Jesus isn’t about fixing yourself first, but by accepting him into your life. He makes you new and helps you with whatever baggage you’re carrying.”

Relief covered Holly’s face, but she shared she needed more time. So, Ryan prayed with her. Holly asked if she could spend the rest of the day with Ryan, to which Ryan responded, “Of course!” Ryan also told Holly she would love for her to start coming to Cru® with her because community is important.

Holly came to the event and she ended up bringing three of her roommates with her! Afterwards, Ryan shared, “I’m so excited that he (God) is using me to tell her more about him.”

Not only is GodTools enabling people like Holly to hear the gospel, it’s also equipping people like Ryan to share this app-based resource with those around her. You can use the app to have engaging spiritual conversations with people God places on your heart too.
